Barbie fans upset as box office record breaker's depression gag feels 'too close to home'

Barbie fans go into meltdown after feeling "called out" by the "brutally specific" Pride and Prejudice scene in the box office record-breaking movie.

Barbie: Official trailer

Since its debut over the weekend, Greta Gerwig's Barbie has made headlines all over the world, whether it be for racking in over $300 million dollars from its opening weekend or its touching storyline that has captured the hearts of fans.

However, one scene in particular has resonated with viewers just a little too much and they have let their feelings known on Twitter, saying it hit a "bit too close to home".

In the movie, Barbie's emotions and experiences in Barbie Land reflect directly on Mattel’s marketing strategy and products.

So after Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) introduces patriarchy to Barbie Land, Barbie (Margot Robbie) is left feeling the "lowest she's ever been", prompting a rush of sales of "Depression Barbie".

An advert showcasing the doll then plays, explaining this figure: "Wears sweatpants all day and night."

"She spent seven hours today on Instagram looking at her estranged best friend's engagement photos while eating a family-sized pack of Starburst and now her jaw is killing her!" the narrator in the advert continues.

"And now she's going to watch the BBC's Pride and Prejudice for the seventh time, until she falls asleep! Anxiety, panic attacks and OCD are sold separately."

Fans were left in hysterics at the mention of Pride and Prejudice, with many admitting they would also watch the BBC classic when they were feeling upset or anxious.

The 1995 series, which aired in the UK, starred Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth starred as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy and has built up a loyal fanbase.

After watching the film, fans took to social media to discuss the reference - which clearly resonated with hundreds of viewers.

One user @wallflowerjac Tweeted: "Okay but anxiety? panic attacks? watching pride and prejudice 7 times? I am indeed Depression Barbie."

Another fan @evsdfg added: "The depression Barbie (anxiety and panic attacks sold separately) hit a bit too close to home so I think I need it."

A third viewer @a2mvcl pointed out: "Still thinking about that line in #Barbie  when they said Depression Barbie watches the BBC Pride and Prejudice on repeat and then they showed THAT Colin Firth clip and I don’t think I’ve felt more called out in my life before."

With @alphabetPig agreeing: "I was directly called out with the 'Depression Barbie' scene...DIRECTLY called out...are they....are they watching me?"

As @heartlyshaped penned: "I remember when they showed the depression Barbie my jaw dropped to the floor and me and my friend just looked at each other like damn they called us out for real."

Meanwhile, @FigmaAntichrist quipped: "Feeling less called out by depression Barbie because I prefer the Kiera knightley pride and prejudice."

Barbie is available to watch in theatres now.
