Barbie success sees price of Allan explode as discontinued toy worth hundreds of dollars

Ken's befuddled friend Allan was charmingly portrayed by Michael Cera in the Barbie movie, that's quickly becoming one of the biggest blockbuster hits of the year.

Barbie and Ken’s pal Allan is now worth hundreds of dollars thanks to the success of the new movie.

Allan (played by Michael Cera) is a standout in the film that stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the iconic dolls.

He was first rolled out in 1964 as a buddy of Ken’s who fits in all the same clothes.

Allan was sadly discontinued just a couple of years later, so there are only a handful still kicking around.

Mattel has also announced they’re keeping Allan off the shelves - for now - despite Cera’s role becoming a fan favorite.

This was good news for online toysellers, however, as there has since been a huge price surge after Barbie’s opening weekend.

On eBay, Allan dolls were reportedly going for around $35 to $76 a pop before the film’s release.

As of Monday those prices have doubled or even tripled, with several toys on sale for as much as $300, according to TMZ.

At the time of writing it looks as though a number of the dolls with their original clothes and packaging have been snatched up by fans.

However, one Allan currently on sale has an asking price of a staggering $450.

It’s fair to say the discontinued doll is now worth much more than it was when Allan was first released over 50 years ago.

Profits from eBay sales won’t go towards Mattel, although they’re already making a killing with Barbie’s record-breaking opening weekend.

In the movie, Allan eventually becomes an ally for the Barbies when Ken introduces the patriarchy to Barbie Land.

He’s shown to have some surprising hand-to-hand combat skills which certainly weren’t advertised when the doll was originally released.

The cast includes several other discontinued pals, including Barbie’s pregnant friend Midge (Emerald Fennell) and ‘Growing Up Skipper’ (Hannah Khalique-Brown).

Barbie is out in cinemas now.
