It's already the movie of the year and stunning work from Margot Robbie both on-screen and behind-the-scenes has helped push Barbie past $1 billion and into sequel territory.

Barbie’s inevitable sequel is closer than ever to being confirmed after another strong performance over the weekend.

The movie has now grossed an incredible $1,183,909,000 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, and continues to dominate the big screen almost a month after its release.

Now, insiders have now confirmed that talks about a sequel are already starting to take place.

“Crew who worked on the Barbie film have been contacted to discuss working on the follow-up,” they said.

Sources have claimed the same team who worked on the first film have been asked to return, which could include director Greta Gerwig.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are also expected to return as Barbie and Ken, although nothing is locked in just yet.

“It is very early days,” a source told the Sun. “But it’s become apparent that bosses want the same crew for the sequel as they did for the first.

“Emails have been sent but firmer details have to be finalized.”

Part of the reason for the film’s success was the huge push from Robbie, who also served as a producer and cast the Barbies herself.

“I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars,” she said in an interview with Collider.

“Which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”

Thankfully, Robbie’s gamble paid off as Barbie’s global earnings have sailed past her predicted figure and is now on track to become the highest-grossing film of 2023.

Sequels and spin-offs are now assumed to be in the works at Warner Bros, although filmmaker Gerwig may not necessarily be returning.

“I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did,” she told The New York Times.

“I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

Meanwhile, toy company Mattel has optioned more than 40 products to be turned into feature films, including Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels and Uno.

Barbie is in theaters now.
