All 41 workers have been removed from a collapsed tunnel in northern India after an agonizing two-week rescue operation.

Video from the effort shows people clapping and cheering as the construction workers are led out of the fallen tunnel in the Himalayas.

The tunnel fell and blocked their path as they were building it 16 days ago.

"All are safe and sound," said government spokesman Kirti Panwar.

The accident happened in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, which is crossed by the Himalayan mountains.

Dozens of rescue workers armed with ropes and ladders waited outside the tunnel with ambulances earlier on Tuesday.

The workers were pulled out through a path made of welded pipes that rescuers previously pushed through dirt and rocks, the Associated Press reports.

Authorities are yet to confirm what caused the incident in the 2.8-mile-long tunnel, which collapsed about 200 meters from the entrance.
