Twenty albums you won't believe turned 10 years old this month

Lorde wrote in her hit song 'Ribs' that it 'feels so scary getting old.' You'll definitely feel old when you realize these 20 albums came out 10 years ago.

Fans can get dressed in black head-to-toe and eat chocolate to honor The 1975’s debut self-titled album being released 10 years ago. But the iconic indie band is far from the only big name in music who released albums in September 2013.

Back in the days when grunge revival and Tumblr reigned supreme, top artists of today like Lorde, HAIM, and The Weeknd released their debut albums. Other artists like Drake and the Arctic Monkeys also put out music during this time.

Experts say the beginning of fall is an excellent time for emerging artists to release music since school is starting and adults are going back to work following their summer holiday. 

The fall of 2013 was no exception. Here are 20 top albums of 2013 to hit rewind and play this month to get in your feels.

Albums that turned 20 this month

The 1975 by The 1975

One of today’s top British indie rock bands released their debut self-titled album 10 years ago. The album’s hit single Chocolate is ranked in Spotify’s top 100 songs from 2013. Other top tracks that Tumblr girls fawned over include: Girls, Sex, and Fallingforyou.

AM by Arctic Monkeys

AM is the fifth studio album from the legendary English rock band. It explores love and relationships with hit singles Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High and Do I Wanna Know?, both of which are in Spotify’s top 100 songs of the year. Other top tracks include R U Mine? and I Wanna Be Yours.

Pure Heroine by Lorde

Ella Yelich-O’Connor, known by her stage name Lorde, was only 16-years-old when she wrote and released her debut album Pure Heroine. The album has appeared on several year-end critics’ lists and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. 

Her hit single Royals is on Spotify’s and Billboard’s top 100 songs of the year, however, Larisha Paul, pop music writer for Rolling Stone, posits that the hit Ribs, a song about the struggles of growing up, has resonated with fans far more as time has passed. 

Ribs is Lorde’s third most streamed song on Spotify followed by Team, which was another hit single off Pure Heroine. The album explores youthhood and critiques mainstream culture for its materialism, fame and social status obsession, and consumerism.

Days Are Gone by HAIM

The Los Angeles born-and-raised sister trio’s debut studio album Days Are Gone was released 10 years ago. The nepo babys’ album was recognized by Pitchfork as one of the 100 Best Albums of Decade So Far in 2014. Hit singles from the album include: Forever, Don’t Save Me, Falling, The Wire, If I Could Change Your Mind, and My Song 5.

Nothing Was The Same by Drake

The celebrated Canadian hip hop rapper released his third studio album, which was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 56th Grammy Awards, 10 years ago. He enlisted collaborators such as 2 Chainz – who also released his second studio album the same month – Big Sean, Majid Jordan, Jay-Z, Jhené Aiko, and Sampha. 

Top hit singles include: Started from the Bottom, Hold On, We’re Going Home, All Me, Pound Cake, The Language, Too Much, and Worst Behavior. Hold One, We’re Going Home and Started From the Bottom both hold spots on Spotify’s top 100 songs of the year.

Kiss Land by The Weeknd

Abel Tesafye, known by his stage name The Weeknd, released his debut studio album 10 years ago. The alternative R&B album includes hit singles: Kiss Land, Belong to the World, Love in the Sky, Live For, Pretty, and Wanderlust.

True by Avicii

The legendary late Swedish DJ Avicii released his debut studio album 10 years ago. He died by suicide at age 28. His groundbreaking EDM music mixed country, house, soul, and bluegrass beats with hit singles including: Wake Me Up, You Make Me, Hey Brother, Addicted to You, and Lay Me Down. The hit single Wake Me Up sits on Spotify’s top 100 songs of the year.

Bangerz by Miley Cyrus

This news might help you to remember when you used to be young. Mega star Miley Cyrus released her fourth studio album with RCA Records 10 years ago. This album marked Miley's stark departure from her previous work during her Disney days, which she said at the time she felt "disconnected" from. Bangerz began Miley's experimentation with new genres such as hip-hop and R&B, which she infused into her signature pop sound. Miley wowed with her hit singles: We Can't Stop, Wrecking Ball, and Adore You. Her performance of We Can't Stop at the Video Music Awards in 2013 was unforgettable for both fans and their parents.

The Bones of What You Believe by CHVRCHES

The Scottish synth-pop band released their debut studio album 10 years ago. Pitchfork ranked it at 180 on their list of 200 Best Albums of the 2010s. The album had seven singles including: The Mother We Share, Recover, Gun, Lies, We Sink, Under the Tide, and Tether. The hit single The Mother We Share is included in Spotify’s top 100 songs of the year.

MGMT by MGMT

The American rock band MGMT known for their psychedelic pop released their third studio album with Columbia Records in September 2013. The self-titled album wasn’t the most popular from the band, however its hit single Alien Days has over 14 million streams on Spotify.

Mechanical Bull by Kings of Leon

The Southern rock band released their sixth studio album with RCA Records, which was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 56th Grammy Awards, 10 years ago. Its hit singles include: Supersoaker, Wait for Me, Temple, Beautiful War, Don’t Matter, and Family Tree.

In Rolling Waves by The Naked and Famous

Three years after releasing their smash debut album Passive Me, Aggressive You — with hit singles like Young Blood, Punching in a Dream, and Girls Like You — the New Zealand indie electronic band released their second studio album. The album's hit single Hearts Like ours has over 32 million streams on Spotify.

Spreading Rumours by Grouplove

Two years after releasing their hit debut album Never Trust a Happy Song — including their smash hit single, Tongue Tied — the American alternative rock band released their second studio album that includes hit singles like Ways to Go.

This Is…Icona Pop

The Swedish duo Icona Pop smashed charts with their second studio album that blends electro house with dance pop. The hit single  I Love It feat. Charli XCX is in Spotify’s top 100 songs of the year.

I Love It and other hit singles like All Night are featured in film soundtracks including Neighbors featuring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, and The DUFF featuring Mae Whiteman, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, and Ken Jeong.

Alive by Jesse J

Two years after releasing her hit debut album, the English singer-songwriter Jessica Ellen Cornish — known by her stage name Jesse J — released her second studio album. Her hit singles Wild, It’s My Party, and Thunder can be found on this album.

Fire Within by Birdy

Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde, known by her stage name Birdy, released her second studio album with hit singles including: Wings, No Angels, Light Me Up, and Words as Weapons. The album came two years after the singer blew up for her heartbreaking cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love.

If You Wait by London Grammar

The English indie pop band released their debut studio album 10 years ago. The electronica pop beats include hit singles: Metal & Dust, Wasting My Young Years, and Strong.

The Electric Lady by Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe released her second studio album 10 years ago. Its progressive soul sound includes hit singles such as Q.U.E.E.N. featuring Erykahu Badu, Dance Apocalyptic, PrimeTime featuring Miguel, and Electric Lady featuring Solange. 

Trouble by Natalia Kills

English synth-pop artist Teddy Sinclair, known by her stage name Natalia Kills, released her second studio album 10 years ago. Top songs include: Problem, Saturday Night, and Trouble.

B.O.A.T. II: Me Time by 2 Chainz

American hip hop rapper Tauheed K. Epps, known by his stage name 2 Chainz, released his second studio album with Def Jam Recordings 10 years ago. It includes hit singles Feds Watching with Pharrell Williams and Used 2. The album has many iconic collaborations with artists like: Drake, Lil Wayne, Fergie, Pusha T, Dolla Boy, T-Pain, and Wiz Khalifa.
