Loyal dog Salvatore sat outside his owner's home for weeks, only for them to never return.

A dog waited outside his owner’s house for weeks, not knowing he had been abandoned.

The loyal dog - named Salvatore - stood guard at his owner’s Florida doorstep for two weeks, holding out hope that they would return for him, but they never did.

Salvatore was eventually taken in by Everglades Angels Dog Rescue in the Sunshine State, where he was given a warm bed, food, water, and a medical checkup.

The organization wrote in a post on their Facebook page: “How could someone leave this boy behind?

“Salvatore stayed by his home after his family moved away, thinking they would return for him. Neighbors left food for him and kept an eye on him until he could be rescued.”

They continued: “As reluctant he was to leave, he has done very well with us. He is sweet and friendly. Salvatore will make a good family dog.”

Salvatore, around six years old, was put up for adoption.

The rescue organization wrote in another post at the time: “Salvatore was very nervous but not aggressive when he was finally brought to the rescue.

“It took a lot of patience, love, and dedication to get this dog to understand that we were there to help him. Sadly he was still holding out for his family. His family let him down. We will not.”

Salvatore quickly gained attention on Facebook from fans who eagerly awaited news about his time at the rescue center and his journey to find a new loving home.

After two months, Salvatore finally found his forever home.

A rescue worker told The Mirror: “Salvatore went to his forever home on Sunday. The wonderful thing is he went to a former adopter family whose big American bulldog passed last year.

“A wonderful family for a wonderful dog.”

One social media user commented on Facebook: “I’ll never understand how humans can abandon their dog leaving them to an unknown fate.

“Salvatore’s story didn’t end at his abandonment though because of the kindness and compassion of Everglades Angels.”
